Matthew C. Simpson grew up in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He received a BA in philosophy magna cum laude from Trinity College in Connecticut, and a PhD in philosophy from Boston University, where he focused on the history of European political thought, and was awarded the University Professors' Modernity Fellowship. He is the former chair of the Philosophy Department at Luther College and currently teaches American politics at the University of New Mexico. Matt writes regularly for the New Republic and other venues and is working on a book about Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the origins of modern democracy. He has been a fellow at the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Vienna, as well as a recipient of research grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Aspen Institute.
