Matthew C. Simpson is a freelance writer and an instructor at the University of New Mexico, where he teaches American politics. Matt received a BA in philosophy magna cum laude from Trinity College in Connecticut and a PhD in philosophy from Boston University, where he was awarded the University Professors' Modernity Fellowship. Before moving to UNM, Matt was the chair of the Philosophy Department at Luther College and the president of that college's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. He writes regularly for the New Republic and other venues and is working on a book about Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the origins of modern democracy. Matt has been a fellow at the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Vienna as well as a recipient of research grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Aspen Institute. His screenplay Tip, about Massachusetts politician Thomas P. O’Neill, was awarded first prize in the Phoenix Film Festival Short Screenplay competition.
